Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care (EBCC):
Enhancing patient care through an evidence-based model

The Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA)’s Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care (EBCC) works to develop a comprehensive and inclusive understanding of chiropractic care. Formed in 2019 as the OCA Evidence-Based Framework Advisory Council (EBFAC), its work is grounded in building a critical foundation for how a description of chiropractic that embraces the continuum of care can be developed and communicated. From this foundation, the OCA will be partnering with organizations to build practical resources for all chiropractors in Ontario.

The OCA acknowledges the important contributions of the Evidence-Based Framework Advisory Council (EBFAC) in supporting EBCC.
Their expertise and commitment help shape initiatives that enhance clinical practice and patient outcomes.

What is Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care?

EBCC goes beyond simply applying research findings to clinical practice. Following Haynes’ model of evidence-based practice, EBCC integrates research evidence, patient preferences and circumstances, and clinical state and context to guide decision-making. Central to this approach is the clinician’s expertise, which plays a crucial role in evaluating and balancing these factors to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. By considering the full clinical picture, EBCC ensures that care is both evidence-informed and individually tailored to each patient’s needs.

How is the OCA Contributing to Evidence-Based Care?

The OCA is committed to advancing EBCC through research, knowledge translation, and practitioner engagement. Our EBCC initiative, grounded in seven research papers nearing publication, emphasizes integrating clinical expertise, patient preferences, and research evidence into practice for optimal patient care, following the Haynes model of evidence-based practice. To bridge the gap between research and clinical application, the OCA also supports and develops knowledge translation efforts that highlight emerging trends and practical insights for chiropractors. Additionally, recognizing the challenges of conducting research, the OCA has introduced a research Incentive program to support and appreciate chiropractors who contribute to studies through surveys, patient care, and other efforts.
