Ontario Chiropractic Association champions research efforts to support chiropractors in their delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered and interprofessional care

Seven papers were published in the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association (JCCA) to support the OCA’s evidence-based chiropractic care initiative

Toronto, ON (January 28, 2026) – The Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA) is excited to announce the publication of seven scholarly papers, including a clinical decision tool as part of its Evidence-Based Chiropractic Care (EBCC) initiative. All seven papers were published in a special issue of the Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association (JCCA).

Through its EBCC initiative, the OCA has led extensive research to support Ontario chiropractors in their delivery of evidence-based, patient-centred and interprofessional care through a shared understanding of evidence-based practice (EBP) in the Ontario context.

The published series advance EBP by examining how research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences and values intersect in clinical care. Its findings identify opportunities for organizations to advance an evidence-based approach to health care delivery and integrate it into their strategic planning – while also providing actionable insights for all stakeholders, including chiropractors and patients – to support EBP.

“This achievement marks a significant milestone for the chiropractic profession in Ontario,” says Caroline Brereton, CEO, OCA and OCA Aspire Canada Inc. “By supporting Ontario chiropractors in advancing evidence-based practice, our goal is to continue to play a leadership role in strengthening collaboration across the health care system and improve care for patients with neuromusculoskeletal conditions.”

The OCA’s Evidence Based Framework Advisory Council (EBFAC) was established in 2018 to create a comprehensive understanding of EBP and tools to support chiropractors in their care delivery and communication with their patients. Through research-driven conversations, council members identified the need to enhance the understanding and application of EBCC in Canada, including developing a shared framework around the definition of EBP in chiropractic care to enhance patient outcomes.

“Our goal with this work is to provide equitable and quality care to all patients, while working collaboratively with other health care professionals,” says Caroline. “Advancing evidence-based practice can elevate care at all levels – from improving clinical decision-making and patient health outcomes to strengthening chiropractic’s role within an integrated, team-based health ecosystem. It can also mitigate the societal and economic burden associated with chronic diseases, including chronic Musculoskeletal disorders.”

The EBCC initiative will also provide chiropractors with practical, plain-language knowledge translation tools to support implementation, educate patients and strengthen communication with other health care professionals. In addition, the OCA’s electronic health record software Aspire is well-positioned to support the chiropractic profession in delivering EBCC by providing data to stakeholders in the health ecosystem, helping turn evidence into everyday practice.

The OCA is pleased to support the paper series to advance evidence-based chiropractic care across Canada. It looks forward to working with fellow chiropractic associations, research partners, government officials and health system leaders to accelerate its mission to enhance health care outcomes for patients across Ontario and globally.
