Our kids’ backpacks — friend or foe?

But for our little ones bundled in heavy and oversized backpacks, the start of the school season can leave them bearing quite a burden. Pens, pencils, notebooks, indoor shoes and lunch — not to mention tablets and books — jammed in an ill-fitted pack can create muscle aches and pains, especially for young children carrying around bags twice their size. Carrying excessive weight can cause wear-and-tear on their little lower backs, joints and muscles. Often times these body parts overcompensate, which can cause stiffness, a loss in range of motion and pain over time.
