The Value of Interprofessional Collaboration in Delivering Quality Patient Care
Helping your patients achieve their best health is a team effort. Chiropractors are qualified to assess, diagnose and treat issues affecting the musculoskeletal (MSK) and nervous system. They can help patients manage their MSK pain. For patients with conditions outside their scope of practice, chiropractors give informed referrals to physicians, nurse practitioners and other health care professionals. They collaborate with them to support their patients’ ongoing care, as required.
Helping Your Patients Manage their MSK Pain
Often patients with chronic conditions, illnesses or injuries, also have MSK challenges, which add to their pain and limit their mobility. For these patients, an interprofessional approach works particularly well.
Increasingly chiropractors collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners and other health professionals as part of an interprofessional team within their patient’s circle of care. By helping these patients manage their pain and improve their physical function, chiropractors can play a key role in their care.
The resources in this section were developed to help you gain maximum value in collaborating with chiropractors to manage your shared patients’ care.
Case study of collaborative care between Darcy Driscoll, MSc, DC, and his patient Anita’s family physician and ultimately her vascular surgeon. Anita first visited Dr. Driscoll to address gradual onset of increasing pain in her right leg and its potential connection to her long-standing low back pain. Following examinations and tests, he urged Anita to contact her family physician to rule out a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Further collaboration identified calcified plaque as the cause of her pain.
